  • Baba Was Born, Shah Reigns

    "Shah began is forty-year reign of Afghanistan, (24)" influencing racisim in the middle-east. People like Hassan were mistreated because of they were Hazara's. This begins the novels connection with social inequality.
  • Baba Begins to Build an Orphanage

    Baba was a kind and generous man. In Afghanistan he held a high socioeconomic status. He shows his generosity when he, "decided to build an orphange." (3) Unlike most poeple in Afghanistan at the time, Baba could afford to share his wealth. He helped the needy around him making him a respectable man toward others.
  • Completion of Orphanage

    After a three year long process of bulilding the orphanage, " a lot of people [stood] to watch the opening ceremony." (14) The people of Kabul appreciated Baba's generocity and came to support the charity. this shows a community bonding together for the greater good.
  • Sanaubar Leaves

    Hassan didnt have a motherly figure after, "Sanaubar...eloped with a band of singers and dancers. (210)" This showed her lack of interest to have a family. Hassan also had to grow up without a mother and constintly be wondering why she left.

  • Hassan has Surgery

    Because of the generosity of Baba, " [hassan examined] his new lip in a handheld mirror. (219)" Baba's splurge on the sugery shows the reader that Hassan means a great deal to Baba. The importance of friendship and money is shown through this.
  • Milestone for Amir

    Amir begins the book with an important memory lacking too much information. He says, " I thought of the life I had lived until the winter of 1975 came along and changed everything. and made me what I am today." (2) Amir gives the reader information about aa special or traumatic event in his life that changed the course of his future. The reader was able to understand amir more as a character and his depths.
  • Amir Wins the Kite Race

    Babas shows his pride toward his son when he cuts the last kite downs and Baba was, " on [a] rooftop, clapping, beaming. (370) This is one of the first moments Amir feels like his father is proud of him. Baba is usually fairly strict with Amir but Amir accomplished a great difficulty.
  • Soviet Troops Involved

    Afghanistan experienced its first signs of upcoming war when, "the first soviet troops parachuted into Kabul on Dec. 27, 1979" (2)
  • Transition to America

    Amir analyzes their move to America by saying, " for me, America was a place to bury my memories. For Baba, a place to mourn his. (129)" Baba is having more of a difficult time transitioning into an American lifestyle. However, Amire sees this move as a place to start over.
  • Baba Dies of Cancer

    Baba was diagnosed with a severe form of cancer. After one day, "not waking up," amire faces extreme loss. He makes further decisions based on his moral belifs. He lets Babas passion for others drive his ability to go back to Afghanistan.
  • Soviet Troops Leave

    Because of a unilateral withdrawal, "the last Soviet troops left Aghanistan in February 1989." (2)
  • Resources Put in Place

    After war and struggling, "Pakistani intelligence officers began funneling arms, money and supplies." (3)
  • Osama Bin Laden Haven

    Osama Bin Laden was supported by the taliban and protected. The articles says, "provided a haven for Osama..." (3)
  • Taliban Defeat

    The Taliban has been defeated but, "continue to wage a guerrilla warfare." (3)
  • Rahim Khan Informs Amir About Hassan's Death

    After Amir moved to America, life continued in Afghanistan. Times got worse and the Taliban grew stronger and were invading small towns. In Hassan's attempt to protest, someone "shot him in the back of the head. (219) " This made a dark impression on the reader. Afghanistan was shown to be an unsafe environment.
  • Amir Visits Afghanistan

    After getting bad news from Rahim Kahn, Amir says, 'Ihave to go to Pakistan. (191)" Since Rahim Khan is very ill, Amir wants to visit him for possibly the last time. Rahim Khan has acted like a fatherly figure toward Amir thorughout the book and continues to show him kindness when he visits.

    Attacks from the taliban in New York forced US soilders to get involved.
  • Golden Gate Park, San Francisco

    Khaled Hosseini draws the reader in my starting the book with a reflection. The author writes, " I sat on a park bench near a willow tree. I thought about something Rahim Kahn said.." (1) Using this tecnique of writing was a way to immediatly engage the reader. Amir's personal reflection doesnt give as much detail to satisfy the reader.
  • Sohrab Attempts Suicide

    After being Harrased in the orphange, Sohrab attempts to kill himslef in the bathroom. Thinking that he had to return to his nightmare, he cut his wrists. Amire found him in the bathroom and was "screaming until I thought my throat would rip and my chest explode .(343)" Amir witnessed complete terror and was scared out of his mind. He was reminded how fragile sohrab was and the things he went through.
  • Corrupt Power

    An Iraq Commander had, "taken charge of the United States Central Command In October, 2008." This may have caused chaos.
  • Deployment of 30,000 Soilders

    Mr. Obama made the decision to, "deploy 30,000 additional troops."
  • Leave Afghanistan?

    Public Officials have said, "the 2014 date was based on the presumption that the American military would be successful enough in fighting the Taliban." (4)
  • Attacks by Al Qaeda

    The US military became involved in Afghanistan when there were "attacks by Al Qaeda" (1)
  • Sanaubar Returns

    Hassan welcomes Sanaubar back into his life by telling her she "could cry if she wanted but she needn't, she was home now. (210) Knowing Sanaubar left him as a child, Hassan showed forgivness and desperation by letting her come home. He shows kindness toward his mother demonstrating the power of family.
  • Sohrab in America

    After many traumatic events, Amir and Sohrab "arrived home...on a warm day in August 2001." (357) Sohrab was unable to show much emotion but he was welcomed into Amir and Soraya's home. Sohrab was given the chance to have a family.
