  • Amir is born

    In the book, Amir is born in, "1964, just one year before giving birth to [Amir]" (6). Amir is born in the summer of 1963, thus he also has much to learn, being a son of such a rich father and his society to come.
  • Hassan was Born

    In the winter, " Hassan was born of 1964."(4) This event signifies the life he will unravel.
  • Baba and Amir go to the Lake

    In the book, Amir gets taken to, "Ghargha Lake, [which is] a few miles north of Kabul" (13). Amir lies to Baba and wants Baba all to himself at this time, which leads to widening the gap between Hassan and his relationship. Amir wants to spend more time with Baba because he wants Baba to be proud of him.
  • The change in Aghanistan

    On July 1, 1973, "Daoud Khan ends Zahir Shahs 40 year reign with a bloodless coup." This event in society changed the setting in a part where Assef gained more power through the intimidation the new ruler had in the country
  • Soviet Union invades Afghanistan

    Amir states, "[b]ecause suddenly Afghanistan changed forever" (34). Amir hears gunfire, and foreshadows parts of the coming plot by suggesting that everthing is going to change forever. As this is a recap, he understands, in hindsight, that this was one of the only times that Afghanistan was the way he remembers it to be when he was a child
  • Hassan gets violated

    In the book, Amir realizes that he is a coward. He says, "I had one last opportunity to stick up for Hassan- the way he had stuck up for me all those times in the past- and accept whatever happened to me. Or I could run" (77). In the end, Amir decides to be a coward and not stick up for Hassan because he is afraid of what Assef might do to him if he intervenes. In addition, Amir didn't yet realize that this would be his turning point in his life.
  • Amir's 13th Birthday

    Amir's 13th birthday is celebrated, but later "Amir frames Hassan of stealing... Ali and Hassan quit working for Baba and leave".
  • Hassan's surgery

    For Hassan's birthday, Baba gave him a present that would stay for him for life, "[s]oon, it was just pink jabbed line....Which is ironic. Because that was the winter Hassan stopped smiling." This quote represents the illusive tale of Hassan struggles living in his society. This foreshadows events that may occur leading into Hassan stop smiling.
  • Ali and Hassan Leave

    After Amir's birthday, Ali tells Baba "[l]ife here is impossible for us now, Agha sahib. We're leaving."This expresses the objective that Amir wanted to be the only that Baba could love.
  • The Invasion of the Soviet Union

    The Invasion of the Soviet Union
    The invasion started "first parachut[ing] [to] Kabul 1979, to assist Babrak Karmal" (NYC)
  • The Russians invade Afghanistan

    In the era of bloodletting, "the communist coup d'etat, and then in December 1979, when Russian tanks would roll into the very same streets where Hassan and I played, bringing the death of the Afghanistan" This event the book changed the setting and in another notice moving the character change when Baba and Amir scape.
  • Baba and Amir flee Afghanistan

    In the book, the Russian occupies Afghanistan and Baba and Amir "since we'd left Kabul just after two in the morning." They realize that there country is dangerous, which creates weakness through Baba's families unlike his power on Kabul.
  • Amir graduates high school

    In the summer of 1983, [Amir] graduated from high school at the age of twenty, by far the oldest senior tossing his mortarboard on the football field that day." This is the start to Amir career in his new life. This event may have happened were his education would have not been altered if the invasion did not happen.
  • Baba has a seizure

    When in California, Baba suddenly "Baba's spittle turned red. He was biting his tongue. I kneeled beside him and grabbed his arms and said I'm here Baba, I'm here, you'll be all right, I'm right here." This signifies the care Amir has unlike the Hassan incident where Amir would take of Baba and leave his side.
  • Sohrab smiles

    When looking at the kites, "[Amir] looked down at Sohrab. One corner of his mouth had curled up just so. A smile" This is a foreshadow to his relationship to Hassan when he stopped smiling when he could. This creates an image that Amir is one with himself that he has a truthful relationship again.
  • Moderated Peace Talks by the United Nations

    The last troops left Afghanistan in February 1898, "after talks moderated by the United Nations" (NYC)
  • The Summer of 1994

    After the Afghanistan descended into vicious strife, by the summer of 1994, "power was anarchically divided among competing warlords and individual fiefdoms." (NYC)
  • Taliban Control Afghanistan

    Buoyed by Pakistan Aid, "the Taliban by 1996 had taken control of Afghanistan."(NYC)
  • The Karzai Government

    In December 2001, Hamid Karzai, "was named chairman of an interim government that replaced the defeated Taliban" (NYC)

    Despite their defeat in 2001, " the Taliban continued to wage a guerrilla to wage a guerrilla warfare from a base in the mountainous and largely lawless tribal area on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

    Giving another chance to Amir, Rahim Khan offers him, "a way to be good again" which makes Amir decides that he needs to go to Pakistan to visit Rahim Khan as his way to amend his past sins.

    After the attack on the World Trade Center in New York City, "President George W. Bush gave Taliban an ultimatum to hand over Mr. bin Laden" (NYC)
  • The United States General In Command

    General Petraeus had taken charge of the United States Central Command in October 2008, "the Iraq commander who received much of the credit for the success of the surge."(NYC)
  • Obama's Speech

    In the speech delivered by Obama vowed " to start bringing American forces home from Afghanistan on the middle of 2011" (NYC)
  • Forces Saty in Afghanistan Longer

    The emphasized idea, "[y]et in a move away from that July 2011 deadline, Obama's administration changed its tone ...that United United States will have forces in the country until at least the end of 2014
