Kite Runner & the History of Afghanistan

  • Sanaubar gave birth to Hassan

    Sanaubar was mentioned and this is what brought back attention to Hassan's mother and his birth state. "None of us had seen Sanaubar since she had eloped with a band of singers in 1964, just after she had given birth to Hassan." (Hosseini,210). This brings in many new perspectives about Sanaubar's personality and can bring pity towaards Hassan.
  • Kite tournament begins

    There was always one thing Amir cherished about winter every year, and that was "kites of course. Flying kites and running them." (Hosseini,49) This was one of the very few hobbies that both Amir and Baba couold share together, and that was one of Amir's favorite things to do because of that reason.
  • Amir wins Kite Tounament

    Amir finally feels an accomplishment of gaining Baba's respect and approval. "All I smelled was victory (Hosseini,65) and that is all Amir cared about right at this moment. He was one small leap away from his dream come true and thats what motivated him more to try and steal the victory.
  • Hassan gets raped

    This is an example of neglection and disrespect Hassan has to face most of his life due to his race. He was just trying to help his friend by retrieving his kite when "Assef knelt behind [him], put his hands on Hassan's hips and lifted his bare buttocks." (Hosseini,75)
  • Amir turns 13

    He hosts a huge party that resembles his popularity and social class in the country of Afghanistan. His father being extremely wealthy is what resulted with "400 guests" (Hosseini,93)
  • Russia invaded Afghanistan

    "The shootings and explosions had lasted less than an hour" (Hosseini, 36).
  • Soviet Union invasion

    "Afghanistan has known little peace since 79', when the Soviet Union invaded. Now it is the scene of what has become the central military struggle for the united states, as American forces try to help a weak and corrupt government tame" (Backround, 1)... "The first Soviet troops parachuted into Kabul to assist Babrak Karmal." (The Soviet Invasion and After, 2)
  • Amir & Baba on way to Pakistan

    Amir and Baba are traveling along to pakistan, but they weren't alone. "There were others, in all about a dozen, sitting with our suitcases between our legs, cramped with these strangers in the tarpaulin-covered cab of an old Russian truck" (Hosseini,110). This is how awful the conditions were for their journey.
  • Baba & Amir arrive in Fremont

    Right when they moved to Fremont, "Baba loved the idea of America... a few streets down [we were] watching boys at batting practice, little girls giggling on the swings at the playground" (Hosseini,125). It was a new start for them butt perhaps this time, it could turn out to be a step in the more positive direction.
  • Amir graduated from High School

    Graduating high school meant a new chapter in Amir's life, and "graguating high school at the age of 20" (Hosseini,131) opened many more gates, oppurtunities, and responsabilities in his life,
  • Amir finishes first novel

    This was a checkpoint and a new beginning to Amir's career. "It was the summer of 1988..[when Amir] finished [his] first novel" (Hosseini,182) It was a part of his life that gave him a purpose because without this novel, Amir would find himself lost.
  • The last soviet troops left Afghanistan

    "They (the troops) left behind a country that was not only devastated by the war but that had become the beacon to Islamic extremists from across the globe who had come to assist in the fighting, including Osama bin Laden and the group he helped found, Al Qaeda." (the Soviet invasion and After, 2)
  • Power was divided among competing Warlords

    "By the summer of 94', power was anarchically divided among competing warlords and individual fiefdoms. But one group would eventually gain control." (The Soviet Invasion and After, 2)
  • Mullah Omar had nearly 12,000 followers

  • Amir recieves call from Rahim Khan

    It was a turning point for Amir to go back to where he came from when "[his] friend Rahim Khan called from Pakistan" (Hosseini,1). This was a turning point because it was like a wake up call that took him away from his dream life in the U.S.
  • Terrorist Attack (9/11)

    The attack on the World Trade Center in New York on Sept. 11, 2001." (Post 9/11 Invasion, 3)
  • Hamid Karzai became the leader of Afghanistan

    "Hamid Karzai was named chairman of an interim government that replaced the defeated Taliban, making him the leader of the country." (The Karzai Government, 3)
  • Hamid Karzai took office proclaiming his wish for peace

    "[Hamid Karzai] took office as interim president saying he hoped to secure peace for Afghanistan and win the country much-needed international aid." (The Karzai Government, 3)
