    We can tell by the quote saying, "I turned thirteen, that summer if 1976."(92) htis is important because Amir is the main character in the book and also the narrator. This lets us know how old he is at different parts in the book.

    Baba opens an Orphanage

    Amir says that "Baba decided to open an orphanage" (13). Amir is reminded of the orphanage later in the book when he is going to get Sorhab. This was also one of Baba's great acomplishments and it shows how Baba wanted to help other people and believed in himself. People told him to hire a real architect but Baba succesfully designed it on his own.

    Assef gives Amir a book about Hitler

    In this quote by Assef at Amir 's birthday party, we can tell that Assef is trying to fight with Hassan and disrespect him. Assef brings Hassan a book and says, "Anyway, I heard you like to read so i brought you a book. One of my favorites." (96) The book was about Hitler, whom Assef knew Amir did not like. This shows that Assef admires Hitler and wants to cause conflict between Amir and himself to show who is right and who is better.
  • Daoud Khan becomes the ruler of Afghanitan

    This event causes Amir and Assef to have a bad relationship. Amir says, "[T]hat night of July 17,1973 ... his cousin Daoud Khan ended the king's forty-year reign with a bloodless coup." (36) This event changes Afghanistans ways of living and causes bad things to happen to Hassan's family and Amir.

    This is a very important qoute in the book. In fact, it is the first full sentence in the book. This lets us know where Amir is starting his story from and that he is narrating. Amir starts off by saying, “I became what I am today at the age of twelve, on a frigid overcast day in the winter of 1975.”(1)

    Amir, "Turned thirteen, that summer of 1976."(93) this was the year Amir had a big birthday party. It is important because it shows that Baba had more respect for him after winnig the kite flying tournament.

    The Russians begin to move in to Afghanistan

    This is an important event because it changes Afghanistan and causes Amir and Baba to move to America. We know this happened because Amir said, "[A]nd then in December 1979, Russian Tanks would roll into the very same streets where Hassan and I played, bringin the death of Afghanistan I knew and marking the start of a still ongoing era of bloodletting." (36) Amir says this event was a major factor in the change of control in Afghanistan.

    This is a very important part in the book. It starts a new chapter in Baba and Amir's life. In the book the setting says "Fremont, California. 1980's" it later talks about Amir visiting a store in 1983 so it happened before then. This changes the way people think about Baba and changes the way Amir and Baba live and interact with each other.

    This is important because it tells us how he stood out from the rest of his class. This could have caused him to build up his values. Amir says, “That summer of 1983, I graduated from high school at the age of twenty, by far the oldest senior tossing his mortarboard on the football field that day.” (131).

    Amir and Baba start going to the flea market and buy a new car

    When Baba seels his old car he shows that he is ready for change. When Amir is narrating he says, “The following summer, the summer of 1984 -- the summer I turned twenty-one – Baba sold his Buick and bought a dilapidated ’71 Volkswagen bus for $550 from an old Afghan acquaintance who’d been a high-school science teacher in Kabul.” (136-137). This was also the year Amir and Baba started going to the flea market, another major change in their lives.

    This is important because Baba says not to embarass him, but Amir disobeys Baba and talks to Soroya for the first time. "Would you like to read one of my stories? ... I would like that" (147) This is the first time Amir has taken a positive action without anyone else's help since the kite tournament when he was 12.

    Amir asks to marry Soroya

    This request from Baba lets Amir start a new life with his wife. Baba tells Amir, "I want you to go khastegari. I want you to ask Gerneral Taheri for his daughter's hand." (161) This shows how Baba finally trusts Amir to be on his own. This is a few months before Baba's death.

    The article says the "the last Soviet Troops left Afghanistan in February 1989, [on the fifteenth (15th)]."

    "By the end of 1994 Mullah Omar [,the founder of the Taliban, and his] nearly 12,000 followers [attempted to] restor[e] the centrality if Islam to daily life.

    The New York Times article says, "The Taliban also provided a haven for Mr. Bin Laden, who arrived by chartered jet at Jalalabad Airport in May 1996, and for Al Qaeda."

    Rahim Khan is sick

    This is the climax of the story to me. It lets Amir see what Pakistan is now and leads him to Sorhab. Amir explains to Soraya that he needs to go but does not know how long he will be gone. Within a week of his phone call, Amir is on his way to Pakistan. All of Amir's past has kept him awake the night before the flight as he awaits the unknown. "I rested my head against the window. Waited, in vain, for sleep." (194)

    The article says that "Mr. Karzai was elected to a five-year term as president in 2004." This happened on October 9th of that year. He said he wanted to get Afghanistan more support from around the world.
  • Obama adds 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan

    Obama puts more power in Afghanistan to end the crisis by "announc[ing] his plan to deploy 30,000 additional troops." this speech was given on December 1st .
  • Obama admin. says troops will stay until 2014

    "July 2011" was the original time to bring troops out of Afghanistan but "the Obama administration changed its [plan to have forces in Afghanistan] until [] the end of 2014."
