  • Baba is Born

    In 1933 was "the year Baba was born." This quote shows how everything was started and how Baba and Ali met. It also explains the relationship Amir and Hassan have.
  • Amir is acknowledged by Hassan

    Amir reads Hassan one of his stories and Hassan says that "that was the best story [he's] read [Hassan] in a long time." (30) This encouraged Amir to write even more that night. This quote shows how Amir started his passion for writing.
  • Assef's Brass Knucles

    In the book, Assef's "famous stainless-steel brass knucles" are introduced. (38) This shows the symbolism of the brass knucles that was worn while Assef violated Hassan. It shows how the brass knucles are a symbol of who Assef is and how he acts representing his toughness/
  • Rise of the Taliban

    In 1970, Baba says, "God help us all if Afghanistan ever falls into their hands." (17) This quote shows how the power of the Taliban started. Also, how the Taliban created different sections of the people.
  • Baba Buys Kites For Amir and Hassan

    Baba takes Amir and Hassan to "Saifo's to buy [their] kites." (51) This quote shows the start of how Amir and Hassan are entered in the kite competition. It shows the value of the kite in the book.
  • Amir Witnesses Hassan

    In 1975, Amir talks about the time he was "crouching behind a crumbling mud wall, peeking into the alley near the frozen creek." (1) This quote shows the fear Amir was in while this was going on. It explains how the scene was not pleasant and it was something he regrets not doing anything about.
  • Amir's 13th Birthday

    Baba throws Amir a birthday party for his 13th birthday and he had invited "the whole world." (93) During this party, Amir thinks about Hassan getting raped. He doesn't fully enjoy the party even though all he wanted was Baba's acceptance.
  • Soviet Union Invades

    On December 27, 1979, "the first Soviet troops parachuted into Kabul" assisting Babrak Karmal. (pg 1)
  • Rahim Khan Lives In Baba's house

    Amir learns how Rahim Khan had lived in Baba's home and "had spend there..in 1981." (195) This quote explains how Rahim Khan had been living in Baba's home since Baba has died. It shows the symbolism of the house.
  • Last time Amir saw Rahim Khan in Pakistan

  • Rahim Khan Visits Hassan

    Rahim Khan tells Amir about when he went to "Hazarajat to find Hassan." He finds out that Ali was killed. Rahim Khan is introduced to Hassan's wife and son.
  • Soviet Are Force Become Useless

    The Soviet Air Force becomes useless "by advanced Stinger antiaircraft missles supplied by the United States to the rebels." (pg 2)
  • Soviet Troops Leave

    In February of 1989, "the last Soviet troops left Afghanistan" after peace talks occured that were moderated by the United Nations. (pg 2)

    in 1994, Mullah Omar's practice was restored through the north and east with his "nearly 12,000 followers." (pg 2)

    In 1996, Afhganistan was taken over by "a student movement" called the Taliban and many strict rules were enforced. (pg 2)
  • Taliban Bans Kite Fighting

    In 1996, "the Taliban banned kite fighting." This quote shows the end of what started the tension between Amir and Hassan. It shows how Amir is trying to codone for his actions and how the kite fighting symbolized the end of their tension.
  • Hassan is Dead

    Rahim Khan gives Amir the letter Hassan had left for him and tells Amir how he was "shot...in the back of the head." (219) This marks the start of how Amir thinks about trying to atone for what he did. He becomes curious about what happened to Sohrab.
  • Sohrab Sent to Orphanage

    Rahim Khan tells Amir that "he's in an orphanage somewhere in Karteh-Seh." (220) Amir is determined to go and find Sohrab. He wants to go back and find him to make up for what he owes Hassan.
  • Amir takes in Sohrab

    At the end of the book, Amir tells Sohrab , "For you, a thousand times over." (371) He takes in Sohrab as his own. He takes care of Sohrab and treats him like his own son.
  • Taliban is Defeated

    In 2001, the Taliban is defeated as a "government [had] replaced [them]."
  • Amir Called by Rahim Khan

    Amir gets a call from Rahim Khan saying he has "to go to Pakistan." (191) This shows how Amir is trying to atone for what he did. It shows a sign of caring and repentance for his actions.

    On September 11, 2011, "the World Trade Center in New York" was attacked. (pg 3)
  • Hamid Karzai

    Hamid Karzai, who was "a supporter and relative of Mohammad Zahir Shah" became chairman of the government that replaced the Taliban. (pg 3)
  • Amir takes Sohrab to a Park

    Amir teaches Sohrab how to fly a kite as he "took the kite to where Sohrab was standing." (367) He teaches Sohrab the one thing that Hassan held close to him while intruded by Assef. It symbolizes the kite as a symbol of Amir and Hassan's relationship.
