Kite Runner In The History Of Afghanistan

  • Beginning Of Story.

    The beginning of the story opens with a flashback of Amirs' when he says, "I became what I am today at the age of twelve, on a frigid day in the winter of 1975." This flashback occurs post Kite Flying contest and Assef has just raped Hassan.
  • Hassan's Surgery

    In July of 1975 Hassan receives a special birthday gift. "It's an unusual present, I know. Baba Said. And probably not what you had in mind, but this present will last you a life time." (46.) in this quote, Baba is givin gHassan a chance to feel somewhat normal. Despite him being a Hazara, Baba shows loving care towards Hassan. (Date was not specific.)
  • Hassan Is Raped

    Following the events that occur during the Kite flying contest. Amir seeks to find Hassan and is informed that he was being chased. Amir finds Hassan cornered by Assef and his 2 friends. Amir then instead of acting out on his friends rape states, "the rest of my life might have turned out differently if I had. But I didn't." (73.) Amir shows us how he feels guilt for not stepping in. However, part of this reason is that he feels that Baba would be ashamed of what he did.
  • Amir is Thirteen.

    "I turned thirteen that summer of 1976. Afghanistans next to last day of peace and anonymity." Amir shows how everything changes in a mater of moments even when things seem to get better. After he made the comment about getting new Servants, tension was high between Baba and Amir, however, slowly it began to improve only to be ripped away once again after peace is disrupted.

  • Escaping from Kabul

    March of 1981 was the year in which "He was taking us to Jalalabad, about 170 kilometers southeast to Kabul." (111.) During this time, Amir and Baba had told no one of their departure because they believed that they could not trust anyone in Kabul anymore so they fled out of Kabul.
  • Fremont California

    They arrival in California has made Baba joyous "it was living in America that gave him an ulcer." (125.) Baba has fallen in love with the 'new' world around him and we see this when "Baba would enlighten me with his politics during those walks with long-winded dissertations." (125.) Baba has shown significant change due to his environment.
  • Graduation

    Because of Amir graduating from school, Baba is "moffakhir Amir, he said. Proud. His eyes gleamed when he said that and I liked being on the receiving end of that look." (131.) the graduation of Amir results in what he has sought out a majority of his life. Babas acceptance as well as pride. This results in a happy enjoyable evening.
  • Baba Has Cancer

    The summer of 1985, Baba is diagnosed with "Oat Cell Caricinoma. Advanced. Inoperable." (156.) during this time, Baba is given the opportunity to take chemo therapy but because of his pride and dignity, Baba refuses the offer. This refusal results in Amir confronting Baba and a fight emerges.
  • The Marriage of Soroya and Amir

    After Baba is released from the hospital Amir tells Baba he wished for him to "go to Khastegari. I want you to ask General Taheri for his daughters hand." (161.) After Amir asks, we see Baba give positive feedback which leads to Amir feeling satisfied. This also shows later on that the two connected as Amir "bursts into giggles. Baba joined." (162)
  • Baba Passes Away

    About a month passing the wedding, Amir and Soroya are talking before "we closed the door. Baba Never woke up." Baba has passed away peacefully in his sleep and now Amir must deal with a reality he did not realize was his own. Baba had made such an impact on Amir and other people's lives and now he must find his own way of doing and solving things.
  • Amir Finishes His First Book

    It has now moved on to the summer of 1988 "Martin called and informed me I was going to be a published novelist." (183.) This is a mile breaker towards Amir because the people who surrounded him did not believe he would be able to accomplish or get anywhere with writing. He proved not only to himself, but to many others that he can accomplish and have a successful life on his own.
  • Soviet Troops Leave Afghanistan

    In February 1989 "after peace talks moderated by the United Nations, the last Soviet troops left Afghanistan." (NYT 2)
  • Adoption Offer

    March of 1991. The option of adoption has been given to Sports and Amir to which the general replies, "Bachem. This adoption... thing, I'm not sure it's for us Afghans." In their culture it is generally not customary to adopt. This forces Amir and Soroya to answer a difficult question. Should the adopt? Is adoption worth it?

    Once the last troops of the Soviet Union left "by the summer of 1994, power was anarchcally divided among competing warlords and individual fiefdoms." (NYT 2)
  • Pakistan Intelligence

    "As early as 1994, Pakistan Intelligence began funneling arms, money, -and supplies to Mullah Omar's followers."
  • Growing numbers

    "By the end of 1994 Mullah Omar he nearly 12,000 followers" (NYT 2)
  • Rahim khan is Sick.

    Amir makes a very abrupt decision, telling Soroya that he must go to Afghanistan because "Rahin Khan is very sick."(191) Amir feels obliged and almost dutiful in which he must return to visit Rahim Khan because the two were close and Rahim Khan treated him like a father. Amir tells Soroya that he believed Rahim Khan to be his first friend showing how much he truly cares.
  • Amir fights Assef.

    After locating Sohrab. Amir discovers that Sohrab has been taken in by Assef. Assef ends up challenging Amir to fight for his life as well as the freedom of sohrab. "We have some unfinished business you and I."(286.) Assef relates back to Hassan and how he was raped resulting in the fight for Sohrab to be freed. Assef is seen as the same evil and powerful man as he was a child which makes Amir more willing to stand up for himself and Sohrab.

    In December of 2001, Hamid Karzai "was elected to a five year term as president in 2004."
  • General Petraeus

    Later on during Obama's term General Petraeus "had taken charge of United States Central Command in 2008."
  • Speech is delivered

    Dec, 1, 2009, President Obama delivers a speech announcing "his plan to deploy 30,000 additional troops."
