  • Amir Is Born

    In 1963, Amir is born and looses his mother because " [Amir's] mother hemorrhaged to death during childbirth." Amir always felt like it was his fault that his mother died, and he was not forgiven.
  • Coup

    In 1976 there was a coup attempting to overthrow the president in Afghanistan.
  • Amir Turns 13

    While Amir is explaining the time of his birthday, he states "i turned 13 that summer of 1976, Afghanistan's next to last summer of peace and anonymity.
  • Soviets in 1979

    Afghanistan was a peaceful country until "The turmoil and extremeism that have dominated its history since ... 1979 invasion by the Soviet Union"
  • Baba and Amir Get to The USA

    After the Russians invade Afghanistan where Amir and Baba were living previously, Baba and Amir leave and head to California, "Baba loved the idea of America." (Hosseini 125)
  • Amir Finishes School

    In 1983 Amir finishes highschool, ready to start a job and go to college when during the graduation ceremony he states "I graduated highschool at the age of twenty, by far the oldest senior..." ( Hosseini 131)
  • Amir Meets Soraya at a Flea Market

    As Amir and Baba start to work as vendors at a flea market, Amir meets a girl named Soraya and he thinks of her as "My Swap Meet Princess" hoping to get to know her better (Hossieni 142)
  • Soviets leave Afghanistan

    The soviet union was in Afghanistan up until 1986, when "the soviet airforce was also rendered largely useless by large stinger antiaircrafs"
  • Baba dies

    After being diagnosed with cancer, Baba is required to take medicine to keep him well. Wanting to die Baba doesnt take his medicine one night using the excuse of "there is no pain tonight" which was a lie. (hoissieni 173)
  • One of Amirs Books Gets Published

    After Baba dies, Amir get his first book published hoping "people all over the world will read your stories" (hosseini 189). This shows that being a popular author is one of Amirs goals.
  • Soviet Union leaves behind problems

    Due to the fighting with the soviet union up until 1989, the soviets "left behind a country that was not only devastated by the war, but had become a beacon to islamic extremists.
  • Sohrab is born

    Sohrab is Hassan's son and "Sanubar came out of the hut holding her grandson, had him wrapped in a wool blanket" (Hosseini 211). This goes to show that everyone was proud of Hassan and his wife even his mom, who he thought would never return.
  • 1994: Islam restored to daily life

    Mullah Omar had the idea of bringing back islam to daily life and "by the end of 1994 Mullah Omar nearly had 12,000 followers". This shows how many people were willing to support something to keep their religions purposes relevant.
  • Taliban

    Although the Afghan people wanted peace, "the taliban by 1996 had taken control of Afghanistan". This made Afghanistan go into a state of chaos.
  • Hassan and his Wife Get Killed

    Hassan is killed along with his wife by the taliban for being hazarajat but their son Sohrab is still alive. Amir feels like "this one last chance of redemption" he had to apologise to Hassan and he died. (hoisiseni 231)
  • Sohrab goes into an orphanage

    Sohrab goes into an orphanage at age 10 and Amir tells him he is going to get him out and bring him to America. This ends up being a lie Amir mentions he might "relinquish him to an orphanage in [Pakistan] then file an orphanage petition". (hoisseni 339)
  • United States Beginning Involvement with Afghanistan

    After the attacks on September 11, 2001 in the united states, America became involved with Afghanistan. The US did this to keep their country safe and in hopes of the same thing not happening again.
  • Rahim Khan gets sick and Amir goes to Pakistan

    Rahim Khan is dying and asks Amir to go visit him in pakistan. Rahim Khan tells Amir that Hassan is actually his half brother and Rahim Khan "wants to tell you everything" as he is dying. (hosseini 202)
  • Sohrab Attempts Suicide

    Sohrab attempts suicide in a bathtub by slitting his wrists because he doesn't want to go into an orphanage. Amir walks into him bleeding out in the bath and states "my hands are stained with Hassans blood, I pray god doesnt let them get stained with the blood of his boys too" (hosseini 346)
  • Taliban out of government

    Thankfully the taliban was out of the government and was being replaced by a man "named chairman of an interm government that replaced the taliban" the mans name was Hamid Karzai.
  • sohrab gets brought to america

    Soraya's father keeps referring to Sohrab as "harraza" and Amir feels the need to stand up to him. He says " you will never refer to him as 'harraza boy' in my presence. He has a name and its Sohrab" (hosseini 361). This shows that Amir thinks of Sohrab as Hassan and treats Sohrab the way he wished that Hassan should've been treated.
  • Sohrab smiles for the first time since being with Amir

    Sohrab had been depressed for a long time because his whole family died and he had to be an orphan. He smiles at Lake Elizabeth in fremont with Amir stating "it was only a smile, nothing more" yet it gave Amir hope for the future (hosseini 371)
  • Amir and Sohrab fly kites

    Amir and Sohrab are in Lake Elizabeth in Fremont when him and Sohrab flew kites this showing how Amir thinks of Sohrab as his son. This goes to show that "[Amir] ran" putting himself in hassan's shoes as the kite runner. (hosseini 371)
  • Obama and Afghanistan

    In 2011, after having troops in Afghanistan for roughly three years Obama stated "the united states could not afford and should not have to shoulder an open ended commitment". This shows that the US cared more about its national interests than helping out Afghanistan.
  • Obama and the American Troops

    In 2014 the troops that were put in Afghanistan were supposed to come out assuming "the American military would be successful enough in fighting the Taliban" therefore they would come out. This happened according to plan and the Americans were taken out six years later.
