    Caroline Chisholm
    • Known as 'the emigrant's friend'
    • Earned this title for her work with poor migrants to Australia last century.
    • Started a home for unemployed migrant women, and then found them jobs.
    • Set up an employment office, and was the first person in Australia to introduce work contracts; agreements about working conditions and pay.

    Federation
    • Until 1901, Australia was not a nation, it was six separate colonies governed by Britain.
    • If people in one colony wanted to buy or sell things to people in another colony, they had to ask permission
    • They decided to join together to form one new country, the Commonwealth of Australia.
    • This was called Federation, and happened in 1901.

    • "The Don", was an Australian cricketer, widely acknowledged as the greatest batsman of all time.
    • He represented Australia for 20 years, playing 52 Tests from 1928/29-1948
    • Knighted for his services to cricket in 1949, he remains the only Australian cricketer to receive a knighthood for services to the game.
