During this time period and under the reign of Suryavarman II the kingdom united and expanded. Also the largest temple of Angkor was built in 37 years and many areas were conquered such as the Mon kingdom and the kingdom of Bagan.

Suryacarman II ascended into the throne. When he killed his uncle he was then crowned king of Khmer at the age of 14. He then married Princess Suryavana Devi of Champa.

When he planned to go to Varanasi he was killed in the battle and left his wife, Suryavana and his only son, Suryavarman III to reign the empire. He was buried in Angkor Wat.

In 1178, Cham launched a surprise attack on the Khmer capital by sailing a fleet up the Mekong River, across Lake Tonlé Sap, and then up the Siem Reap River. They then invaded the Khmer capital of Yasodharapura and put the king to death.

During this time period he expelled the Chams who took Angkor, restoring his kingdom and then invaded Champa. He also built temples, monuments, highways, a hundred hospitals, and the Angkor Thom Complex.

Bayon was the last great temples of the Khmer empire to be built. It was constructed during the reign of King Jayavarman VII. The Bayon dominated by five towers, with each side of each tower being carved with the serene face of King Jayavarman.

Jayavarman VII expands the empire further east to Champ and builds a 3.5 mile wall around the city. However this is when the empire is beginning to decline since they were losing money from over resourcing and unwise use of those resources.

It is not confirmed to why the empire fell but the major factors were that they had wars with the neighboring countries, over-population of its cities and climate change bringing a longer drought to their region.

The Khmer Empire was founded by king Jayavarman II in 802 AD. Then he declared independence from the Srivijaya Empire and conquered parts of Kampuchea, Laos and Vietnam.

The Angkor Wat was dedicated to the Hindu god, Vishnu and most of the work for its construction was done during the rule of king Suryavarman.
