On August 2 the German army launched an offensive attack on the city of Stalingrad in Russia. The battle lasted until February 2, both sides suffered major losses but in the end the Soviet army surrounded the German forces and claimed a victory.

American, British, and Canadian forces stormed the beaches of Normandy on June 4 to take back France. While the Alies suffered heavy losses, they came out victorious.
