    In July of 1945, Germany had a meeting called the Potsdam Conference. This was the meeting that made Germany into 4 different sections.

    Hiroshima
    On August 6th, 1945, the United States dropped a bomb, in which they called "Little Boy", on Hiroshima. This bomb killed 80,000 people and this was not even what the U.S. called a big bomb! Then again on August 9th, 1945, the U.S. drops another bomb on Nagasaki, killing 70,000.

    In the late 1940s and early 1950s, the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States grew bigger.The threat posed by Communists in the U.S. became known as the Red Scare. The Red Scare led to actions that left a lasting effect on the U.S. government. People were questioned to see whether they were loyal to the government, The HUAC, investigated the government and the people in the film industry. Fear linked to the Red Scare began to to finally stop in the late 1950s.

    The Cold War had just begun when it turned into a bloody, expensive war. A few days later, North Korea's invasion of South Korea brought the United Nations' against them. That made the United States get involved with their military. Everyon knew that this wouldnt be easy but, no one expected that this would last for 3 years.

    Vietnam War

    Fighting in Vietnam had been going on for years before the war actually started.The Vietnamese suffered under French rule for almost 60 years when Japan finally invaded Vietnam in 1940. The US was dedicated to the foreign policy of containment. They had fear that Communism would heighten and by the U.S. domino theory, The US didnt want Vietnam to become a communist country, so they helped France defeat Ho Chi Minh.
  • Space Race

    The Soviets said they were going to put the first satelites into orbit in the fall of 1957. The Soviets beat the Americans into putting the first human into space, and also the first satelite. In 1961 Kennedy announced that the next plan was to send someone to the moon. Everyone doubted Kennedy's hopes, thinkning that the Soviets would in fact beat the US to the moon.
