One of Poppers later works that addresses the intellectual origins of totalitarianism and the defense of liberal democracy. “…Popper argues that spirit of free, critical inquiry that governs scientific investigation should also apply to politics” (The Open Society and Its Enemies). Karl Popper believed that election day should be a day of judgment and an opportunity to conclusively dismiss failed governments.

Popper dedicated this book to those who fell victim to the fascist and communist belief in inexorable laws of historical destiny. Historicism was described by Popper as a prime source of political and moral devastation and is used to justify a particular attitude towards political reform. Poppers pollical criticism was much needed at a time when communism was on the rise.
