Jim Valvano attended college at the University of Rutgers playing basketball. He was a point gaurd for Rutgers from 1964 to 1967.

Valvano made his coaching debut with the Johns Hopkins Bule Jays, he was only there for one season with a record of 10-9 he was fired after his first season.

Valvano was hired for his secong job at Bucknell college, he spent 3 seasons there going 33-42 then he was fired again because of his record.

Jimmy V was back to the coaching life after leaving Bucknell he was hired by Iona college as the head coach in five seasons had the combined record of 94-45 leading Iona to the NCAA tournament twice getting as far as the second round.

Valvano made his last coaching stop after Iona at NC State University. He was there for 10 seasons leading the Wolfpack to a record of 209-114. Making it into the NCAA tournament 8 of the 10 years and won the champoinship in 1983, the most suprising upset of the 20th century. Making his legend even more known.

In his 3rd season as NC States head coach Valvano won the national championship against a heavly favord Huston team that had future NBA hall of famers Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler.

Jim Valvano made his speach at the ESPY's when accepting the inaugural Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award, he announced the creation of The V Foundation for Cancer Research, an organization dedicated to finding a cure for cancer. He said the foundations motto would be " Don't give up...... Don't ever give up".

On April 28, 1993 Jim Valvano passed away losing his fight to bone cancer.
