  • Fathers Harold, O’Neil, and Dixon, the first convict priests, arrive. The convicts include Italians, Portuguese, Austrians, Poles and Jews.

  • The first public Mass is offered by Fr Dixon. The first European settlement in Tasmania.

  • Fr Jeremiah O’Flynn arrives.

  • Fathers Therry and Connolly, the first "official" priests, arrive. Fr Therry begins the first Catholic school at Parramatta.

  • John Bede Polding becomes Australia’s first Catholic bishop.

  • Mary MacKillop dies. There are already 1000 Sisters of St Joseph.

  • Mannix becomes Archbishop of Melbourne.
