A judge continued the arraignment Tuesday for Austin Sigg, the teen suspect accused of kidnapping, slaying and dismembering a 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway. The 18-year-old is scheduled to enter a plea April 12. The defense asked for a two month extentionsion, but the judge gave them 30 days. Police say Sigg told them he wants to plead guilty. -

The prosecution expressed concern that the defense is working to set up a mental-state defense in the case. The defense says it simply wants to protect its case and address all pre-trial legal issues.

She told the court that her son confessed to her that he led Ridgway into his bedroom. Ridgeway asked Austin Sigg if she was "ever going to see her mother again?" At that point, Austin Sigg strangled the 10-year-old girl and dismembered her body in the family's bathtub, a tearful Mindy Sigg told the court.

Originally, those cases were set to be tried in the same proceeding. However, on Friday afternoon, the judge in the case decided to sever the two cases against Sigg so that the jury would not be overwhelmed by the amount of disturbing evidence in the Ridgeway case.

Jury selection may take two weeks. Opening statements are scheduled for October 3. The trial is expected to last three weeks.The judge also ruled that doctors may to testify the girl was sexually assaulted. Attorneys for Austin Sigg objected to the doctors' designations as experts.

It was the park that became a memorial to 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway after her abduction and murder last October 5.
