  • Traveles to Tanzania

    When Jane was 26 she traveled from England to Tanzania to study the world of wild chimpanzees.
  • Jane discoveres that chimpanzees eat meat and make tools

    Chimpanzees had been assumed to be vegetarian but Jane during her research discovered that a group of chimpanzees attacked and ate a red colobus monkey that had climbed high into a tree.
    Jane also discovers that chimpanzees make tools to remove termites from their mounds, a discovery that would force science to reconsider its definition of homo sapiens: “Man the Toolmaker.”
  • National Geographic publishes magazine about Jane

    National Geographic publishes the first cover story about Jane called “My Life Among the Wild Chimpanzees” that is seen all around the world.
  • First Film about Jane

    National Geographic films releases “Miss Goodall and the Wild Chimpanzees” which brings great success all around the world.
  • "Four Year War"

    Two groups of chimpanzees in Gombe, the Kahama group and the Kasakela group start a conflict.
  • Cannibalism

    Jane observes cannibalism among the Gombe chimpanzees when a mother and daughter chimpanzee kill babies in their own group.
  • The Jane Goodall Institute is created

    Jane founds her own institute to expand research on chimpanzee and contribute on the protection, management, and environmental education.
  • Jane's first conference

    Jane goes to Chicago to attend a conference about ‘Understanding Chimpanzees’. This changes her attention not only for research and observation but more for a general animal-human conservation approach (protecting them).
  • Roots & Shoots originates

    Roots and Shoots started when Jane discussed how youth can help our world to be better with a group of students in Tanzania.This organization was made to give the power to youth to make good solutions for big problems.
  • Jane Institute’s Tchimpounga sanctuary

    Jane establishes the Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center to provide a chimpanzee orphanage to take care of chimpanzee that are used for illegal commercial, bushmeat and pet trade. Even today this center still cares for more than 150 chimpanzees.
  • Community-conservation work in Western Tanzania

    The Lake Tanganyika Catchment Reforestation and Education program was created to address poverty, to help the population in the villages around Lake Tanganyika and to stop the rapid pollution that is happening in the forests, especially in the indigenous forest..
  • Conservation science program

    Jane's conservation science program helps improve the action of conservation decision making, it also informs the chimpanzee populations management and helps design land uses that help the protection of chimpanzees and the protection of where the chimpanzees live.
  • Jane is a UN Messenger of Peace

    Dr. Goodall is given the honor of the United Nations for global citizens for her work to create a more peaceful world through Roots & Shoots.

Together, we're proceeding to assemble a superior tomorrow and future.
