In 1607 , 104 men and boys arrived in North America to start a settlement . On May 14 they picked Jamestown , Virginia for their settlement , which was name after their King James I . The settlement became the first permanent English settlement in North America.

In 2019 Jamestown , in cooperation with Williamsburg , will hold a commemoration that marks the 400th anniversary of four landmark events in American history , the first meeting of Virginia House of Burgesses , the arrival of the first Africans in the New World , and the first Thanksgiving.
