    the growth of the Engineering Works

    The growth of the engineering works caused more need for iron and steel. Imports in 1835 was about 5500 tonnes of iron and steel. This increased and by 1840 7500 tonnes were being imported.
  • Peter Russel took over the Sydney Foundry and Engineering Works

    Peter Russel took over this foundry in Australia in 1841. It produced both iron and brass castings. This business became PN Russel and Company.

    first attempt at establishing iron and steel smelting

    In 1848 was the first attempt at establishing iron and steel smelting. this was in Australia near Mittagong, NSW. This smelting plant closed by 1877 as it was not economical.
  • Institute of Engineers

    Peter Russel founded the Institution of engineneers in 1870.

    Second Attempt at establishing iron and steel

    This attempt was made in Victoria NSW in 1873. With the formation of the Victoria iron company it then became the Lal Lal iron mining CO. Ltd in 1874.
  • Small Blast furnace Built

    In 1875 a small balst furnace was built. This lasted into the 1880's however it was never a economic proposition. A employee was sent to Britain to learn about the blast furnace and it took five years to acheive production that was satisfactory.
  • BHP establishment

    Broken hill proprietary Company limited in 1885. Australia had the first major mining and steel production company.
