The tramway, an electrically powered public transportation vehicle running on rails, is an American invention. It was New Yorker John Stephenson who, in 1832, built the first horse-drawn line between Manhattan and Harlem. After conquering many cities whose topography was adapted to its development, the tramway retreated from other modes of transport before making a comeback motivated by environmental considerations.
