    Daniel Hess is the first person to patent a version of the vacuum. This was patented sometime in 1860. Even though this sweeper was not motorized people still consider it the first vacuum.
  • The Whirlwind

    The Whirlwind
    Hand-crank for suction vacuum invented by Ives Mckaffey which wasnt very successful and was invented sometime in 1869. The Whirlwind was a little bit nicer vacuum but not much because it was still very heavy. Whirlwind's where sold for $25 which is equivelent to $500 today.

    Carpet Sweeper
    The carpet sweeper was invented by Melville Biselle in 1876 but was not motorized. This was still very convenient for people beacuse they could suck dirt out of their carpet's. The carpet sweeper was basically a long pole attached to a box looking object.

    John Thurman invented gasoline powered vacuum cleaner. He used this for a door to door cleaning service pulled by horses. Thurman would charge $4 for a clean (which was a large amount of money at the time).

    Hubert Booth was a great man that invented the electric vacuum. However, this vacuum was not as the ones we have today. It was very big,heavy,and horsedrawn. Booth would park his vacuum outside of house windows and stick little hoses through the windows to clean houses.

    Chapmen and Skinner's Portable Vacuum Cleaner
    in 1905 Chapmen and Skinner made a more moveable vacuum (92 pounds). This was super convenient because now more people could move their own vacuums and could save money from paying services that vacuumed for you. However, this is still very heavy compared to the vacuums we have today. This happened sometime in 1905.

    Air-way sanitizor showed off the first disposeable vacuum bag.
    The disposeable vacuum bag was very nice because after people finish vacuuming or the bag gets full, you can just get rid of it easier and reapply one. This was invented sometime in 1920.

    The Hoover Constellatio was made by Hoover and hovered above the ground while cleaning. It is a very unusual vacuum. Instead of having wheels, the constellation floated above the ground on exhaust. Thus, making it easier to move around. The Constellation was invented some time in 1952.
  • The Pool Vacuum

     The Pool Vacuum
    Invented by Ferdinand Chauvier sometime in 1974. used water pressure to clean pool debris. This vacuum is effiecient because it is powered by the normal operations of a pools filter. Pool vacuums are a very useful thing because of the fact that you can just stand outside the pool, stick a big pole looking object into the water, and walk around the pool.

    Intro of Roomba the Robot Vacuum
    At iRobot, Helen Greiner and others invented roomba the robot vacuum cleaner. This was launched sometime in september of 2002. Everyone really liked the new invention because, who really likes vacuuming right? Plus it does a great job getting around corners and not missing big patches of dirt or anything on the floor.
