Archaic Greek Sculpture - Kouros from Attica c.590 BCE
The first period of ancient Greek sculpture, Archaic sculpture, featured heavy use of symmetry and figures posing in a very rigid frontal stance. It was concerned with natural beauty and the human form.
The artists who created these sculptures were expressing their interest in rationalized and human form. They likely stood outside of temples or as grave markers.
This period is important because it set the stage for later Greek art, and has taught later generations a lot about their culture.
