    Sputnik History
    Sputnik was the first artificial Earth satellite. The Russians hurried to complete Sputnik before the Americans launched anything into outer space. Sputnik was manufactured by the Soviet Ministry of Radiotechnical Industry. It was a 58 cm diameter polished metal sphere, with four external radio antennae to broadcast radio pulses. It was visible all around the Earth and its radio pulses were detectable.

    After the launch of Sputnik the Americans were in outrage. The USSR's launch of Sputnik spurred the United States to issue directive 5105.15 establishing the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA or DARPA) in February 1958 to regain a technological lead. The organization united some of America's most brilliant people, who developed the United States' first successful satellite in 18 months.
