International Agreements & Commitments for Action on Climate Change

  • First Climate World Conference

Climate change was first recognised as an issue here. Evidence slowly started to build on the harmful effects of carbon dioxide.
  • First IPCC Report

    First IPCC Report
This was the first report on Climate Change. This report confirmed that climate change was a reality and was supported by scientific data and facts.
  • The Kyoto Protocol

    The Kyoto Protocol
This was protocol was signed by some 160 nations at the third UNFCC conference. It was the first legally binding commitment made by countries to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 2012.
  • Global Economic Crisis

The world fell into recession. National governments took focus away from the environment and focused only on industrial development and output. However, a decrease in active factories meant lower GHG productions.
  • China Becomes Worlds Largest Emitter

    China Becomes Worlds Largest Emitter
As growth and development increased, China overtook the United States as the worlds largest green house gas emitter. This period of growth is projected to last a long time, and China will soon account for most of the worlds greenhouse gasses.
  • Fifth IPCC Report

As of 2014, this was the strongest attack and warning on climate change. It clearly stated that global warming was happening and human activities were causing it. This report helped raise widespread awareness on climate change.
  • Paris Climate Accords

The Paris Accords, also known as the Paris Agreement is a legally binding climate change treaty that covers climate change mitigation, adaptation and finance. It aims to substantially reduce greenhouse gas emission. The agreement also aims to substantially reduce global greenhouse gas emissions in an effort to limit the global temperature increase in this century to 2 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels, while pursuing the means to limit the increase to 1.5 degrees.
  • Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action

The Marrakech Partnership was an important follow-up to the Paris Climate Accords. It enabled cooperation between governments, investors, businesses, and other actors for the fight against climate change. It also supported poorer countries to help develop their nations in a sustainable manner.
  • September Climate Strikes

    September Climate Strikes
The climate change strikes that took place in September of 2019 were done across 4500 locations and 150 countries. They brought global and media attention to the issue. Furthermore, they helped raise awareness not only among the youth but also among government leaders.
  • IPCC's Sixth Report on Climate Change

This was hands down the direst warning on climate change. Research for this report has proved that there are already irreversible effects of man-made climate change and that countries are not doing enough to bring down their carbon emissions. In short, it was a "do-or-die" call for humanity.
