Immune System Timeline

  • Step 1

    Step 1
A person eats or interacts with an allergen or substance that causes a reaction, for the first time
  • Step 2

    Step 2
Once the body recognizes the allergen, the body creates an antibody ( a protein that detects harmful substances)to fight it off.
  • Step 3

    Step 3
The newly created antibody attaches itself to the cells found in the tissues all over the body. This prepares the body in case that specific allergen enters the body again.
  • Step 4

    Step 4
The allergen binds to the antibodies and sends out a signal to the body to release histamine if the food allergen enters the body again
  • Step 5

    Step 5
If the allergen is introduced to the body again, histamine is released, and the large amounts of histamine cause irritation in the body. The reaction caused by histamine is different for every person, and can vary from mild reactions (hives) and severe reactions (shortness of breath or death)
