    USA becomes the first country other than Canada to win the IIHF World Championship. Spread popularity internationally.

    The Soviet Union begins its streak of nine consecutive IIHF World Championship gold medals.

    Body-checking is allowed in all three zones in international hockey. Rule that set up drastic changes in the sport

  • Miracle

    USA wins the inaugural World Cup of Hockey, which replaced the Canada Cup.Biggest win in years. Drew publicity to the sport.
