  • Early Career

    Professor Ian Hacking's early work centered around probability and logic as well as the Philosophy of Mathematics. However, he branched out quickly and began and interesting philosophical effort to connect the Sciences and Humanities. By providing historical anecdotes of various human mental illnesses, Professor Hacking has been able to bridge the often wide gap between the two branches of learning. (Grandy)

    Throughout his career, Dr. Hacking's interest and philosophical efforts were to develop a bridge between the natural and social sciences.     Dr. Hackings presents his lecture of "Kinds of People" to the British Academy. In the paper, Dr. Hackings describes his ideas about Looping of People where classifications of people, particularly when discussing various disorders, has the unfortunate effect of causing people to react to the classifications themselves, thereby adjusting those peoples actions.
