    THREE SISTERS SET ON A 28 DAY JOURNEY
    In this year, the sisters traveled from the Mother house in Muenster, Germany for a health care mission in Belleville, IL. There was an old school house that was renovated into a hospital and convent. The sisters only had enough room for six patients in emergency cases and for the next five years were living in the hospital to focus on nursing those who were sick.

    The little school house could not accommodate the growing number of patients, so a larger hospital (image shown) was built that could hold 58 patients on the grounds of which the current hospital is today.

    Saint Elizabeth of Hungary The patron saint of the hospital, has characteristics of loving the poor and her work for social justice. Saint Elizabeth was the daughter of the King of Hungary and at the age of 16 she learned about Francis of Assisi and the compassion for the poor. Elizabeth dedicated her life to care for the sick and poor and she joined the Third Order of St Francis of Assisi that were dedicated to helping care for the poor.     NEW ADDITIONS AND RENOVATIONS
    From 1880 to the 1950's there has been many renovations and additions added to original structure of the hospital on the same grounds but replaced with more patient rooms, and up to date remodeling.

    The hospital built a reputation around the Belleville,IL surrounding area as leader in health care for the Southern Illinois region.

    ST. ELIZABETH HOSPITAL EXPANSIONS
    In 1954. the hospital expanding in size with additional medical office buildings and other health care facilities. Outpatient facilities in O'Fallon, IL and Mascoutah, IL to provide accessible and convenience. The hospital has partnered with HSHS Medical Group, Prairie Heart Institute and a Wound care clinic to provide patients with integrated health care, and jobs for St Clair County.

    FUTURE REPLACMENT HOPSITAL ANNOUNCED
    For over 140 years HSHS St. Elizabeth hospital has provided health care to the Metro East communities, and with the practice of health care change in agreement with HSHS, St. Elizabeth hosptial and the Third Order of St Francis plan to build a new, accessible replacement hospital aligned highway I-64. The replacement hospital is patient-focused as always, with advance technology to increase the ability to provide life saving and sustaining accessible care for those of the Metro East.

    Depsite the Mayor's eight months of litigations to move locations from Belleville, IL to O'Fallon, IL there was no standing to bring their lawsuit and the case has been dismissed.
