Ideas can come from anyone. Even you!
-
Contact elected officials with your idea for a bill that you came up with.
-
If your elected official likes your idea and want to make it a law, they will write up a bill.
-
A bill can start its way to becoming a law in either The House of Representatives or The House of the Senate.
-
Your bill gets introduced by the primary sponsor that is either a Senator or a Representative to either of the house of Congress.
-
In the House of Representatives bills are placed in a wooden box called "The Hopper."
-
Representatives or Senators meet in a small group to research, talk about, and make changes to the bill.
-
The small group of Representatives and Senators vote to accept or reject the bill and its changes before sending it.
-
The bill is sent to the House or the Senate floor for debate or to a subcommittee for further research.
-
Members of the House or the Senate now debates the bill and propose changes or amendments before voting
-
Majority vote wins. If Majority vote is for the bill it passes through that house and moves to the other house.
-
The same voting process happens in the other house.
-
Both Houses have to agree on the same version of the bill.
-
Once agreed upon the same final version of the bill, the bill goes to the President.
-
If the president vetos the bill it goes back to congress to go through the same process over again.
-
If the president accepts the law, then the bill becomes a LAW!!!
