  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    Plessy v. Ferguson
    1. Legal case that eventually reached the U.S. Supreme Court to test the constituionality of segregation.
    2. The Supreme Court ruled that the separaation of races in public accommodations was legal.
    3. This decision established the doctrine of "seperate but equal", which allowed them to maintain segregated facilites as long as they provided equal service.
  • USS Maine blows up

    USS Maine blows up
    1. USS Maine was ordered to Cuba to bring home American citizens in danger from the fighting.
    2. The ship blew up in the harbor of Havana.
    3. More than 260 men were killed.
  • Spanish-American War

    Spanish-American War
    1. It was a conflict between Spain and the United States as the result of of American intervention in the Cuban War of Independence.
    2. US declared war following the sinking of the US Maine ship.
    3. The war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris on December 10th, 1898.
  • Teddy Roosevelt Elected President

    Teddy Roosevelt Elected President
    1. In 1904 Roosevelt was thrust into presidency becoming the youngest president ever at 42 years old.
    2. While in office, he boxed.
    3. He saw the presidency as a "bully pulprit", and adopted the Square Deal.
  • First World Series

    1. The Boston Pilgrams beat the Pittsburgh Pirates.
    2. African-American baseball players were excluded from both leagues because of racical discrimination.
    3. National League was formed in 1876 and the American League in 1900.
  • First Flight at Kittyhawk

    First Flight at Kittyhawk
    1. The first succesful flight by Orville and Wilbur Wright.
    2. They first built a glider.
    3. This flight in Kittyhawk, North carolina covered 120 feet and lasted 12 seconds.
  • Meat Inspection Act

    Meat Inspection Act
    1. Roosevelt pushed for the passage of this act.
    2. The meat inspection act dictated strict cleanliness requirements for meatpackers and created the program of federal meat inspection.
    3. It was in use until it was replaced by more sophisticated techniques in the 1900's.
  • 17th Amendment Ratified

    17th Amendment Ratified
    1. Before, each states legislature had chosen its own United States senators, which put more power on party bosses and wealthy corporation heads.
    2. Progressives pushed for the popular election of senators to force them to be more responsive to the public.
    3. The senate refused to go along with the idea at first.
  • Panama Canal Opens

    Panama Canal Opens
    1. Work began in 1904 with clearing of brush and draining of swamps, by 1913, the height of the construction, more than 43,400 workers were employed.
    2. On August 15th, 1914 the canal opened for buisness.
    3. More than 1,000 merchant ships passed through during its first year.
