    Conquering The Western Frontier
    The untamed regions of the West were crucial in the country's economic prosperity when people started to settle the West in hopes of prosperity through cultivating the land and mining. Despite the progress made by the Western crossroads this threatened the way of the Native Americans, but the people of the United States spared no expense.

  • Sand Creek Massacre (social)

    Sand Creek Massacre (social)
    200 Cheyennes composed of mostly women and children were absoloutly slaughtered for no reason what so ever by near by U.S. troops under Colonel John Chvington
  • Wheat Belt (economic)

    Starrting at the Eastern end of the Great plains and ending in Dakota and Kansas the Wheat belt was a part of the country that was used to cultivate wheat. The harvests became the world's leading export and this helped the economy of the widly expading nation dramatically.
  • Homestead Act (political)

    An act that gave a legitimate method for people to settle land and gain title of property in the West. $10 was all a homesteader needed to ahve up to 160 acres as long as they cultivated it for 5 years. This encouraged people to settle the west.

    With millions of immigrants arriving the country was underoing a crticial transormation, ushering in cutting edge technologies and shifting America into one of the world's leading industrial powers. Although on the exterior it seems like this was progress, there was much corruption that derived from this when organizations formed with selfish intentions.

    Translating to "let people do as they choose." this supported the policy that goverment shouldn't interfere with the economic choices of the people unless to maintain peace. This allowed for the "American Dream" to have no limits

    Inventor of barbed wire this allowed for farmers to keep their cattle from roaming free ushering in the cattle boom which was another prominent part of the country's economic system at the time.

    Bell concepted the idea of the telephone which would revoloutionize communication throught the world forever and was a huge impact in many aspects of technology that derived from his idea.

    The Age of Imperialism
    Conqering the western frontier and mastering industrialization the U.S. was feeling very nationalistic and looking to expand to it's fullest potential.

    This was a reserve system that had banks keep a porteion of their deposits in a reserve bank. This restored bublic confidence and provided financial comfort against sudden losses.

    After the explosion of the U.S.S. Maine the country blamed Spain for the incident and declared war on them. After the U.S. won they gained new territories such as Cuba , Phillipines, Puerto Rico, Guam, Hawaii, and Alaska, giving U.S. the benefit of being imperialistic

    Progressivism, Eyes on the Prize
    With the hopes to correct the negative effects caused by industiralization and urbanization, the United States felt optamistic set out to be the best it could be with reform and growth.
    The image used here is a perfect example of people (women) banning together to stand up for what they beleive in and to attain maximim bennefit of the American dream.
  • The Open Door Policy political economic

    This policy allowed for all countries to openly trade with China under the condition that none of the major countries establish seperate spheres of influence in China. Japan later violated the policy in 1937 so the U.S. imposed an oil embargo. The policy ended with the communist takeover of China in 1949

    Trying to remain nuetral when the war was occuring in Europe the United states ended up Joining the Allied cause. This stimulated the economy and gave the U.S. more nationalistic pride.

    Writers and press often exaggerated and hyped up stories to attract readers and gain support for the cause of whatever gossip is being told , more often than not about the war.

    The Roosevelt collary was the involvement with foreign affairs . In 1904 it was stated that ths U.S. would interfeir in Latin America affairs to maintain economic and political stability.

    Alcohol was blamed for alot of problems in the U.S. such as money and family issues with men spending their wages on alcohol and leading to physical abuse and sickness. So in 1920 it was banned.

    The 20's was a turbulant time with art , jazz music, technology and advertising flourishing throought the country and ushering in the modern American way of life. These changes were rather contreversial to what was considered proper, with a new style of dance, bootlegging, more leaniant women and just an overall god time such as depicted in the image used here of a high class social gathering such as those of "The Great Gatsby"

    Fun loving life style that trended for women during the twenties. They smoked cigarettes, drank alcohol, cut eheir hair short, dressed revealing and persued social freedom. This just encouraged everyone to get together and have a good time.
  • Advertisement (economic/social)

    With production at it's maximum capacity the demand for supply needed to be increased, so in the 1920's advertising consumed the media. Commercial messages were able to reach potential consumers in magazines, newspapers, billboards and over the radoio.
  • New Technology (Social)

    Mass production techniques made technology affordable to the middle class. The automobile, movie and radio companies skyrocketed during the twenties. Companies made a lot of money due to these products because they were affordable and necessary to some families, The invention of the baccuum cleaner, laundry machine, electric razors and cars were in mass production and these products helped women get their work done earlier and dars helped people get around quicker.

    After the stock market in America crashed this caused financial crisis for millions of people. With people hungry and unemployed the goverment made efforts to revive the economy with President Hoover and eventually the Democratic Franklin D. Rooselvelt.

    Chis was the day that all of the value of the stocks plummited, stocks lost 10 to 15 billion dollars in value, this set the tone for the Great Depression

    An idea by Prisident Hooover, Congress set this up to make loans to banks, railroads and agriculture. It lent about $238 million to 160 banks, 60 railfoads and 18 building and loan organizations.

    Walt Disney is the founder of Disney, the first feature length film he produced was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Rich people went so see movies and cartoons in theater, he later produced The Wizard of Oz and it was a colofrul musical meant to lift spirits.

    Despite the country's attempts to avoid the war the Japanese bombin of Pearl Harbor made it final. Americans along with allies fought against the Axis powers throught the world and after critical causualties on both sides and the first atomic bomb the Allies defeated the Axis powers.

    A femal character from a popular sont, Rosie worked in a factory while her boyfriend served in the war. Rosie's image was on posters, newspapers and magazines. Women all over the country looked at Rosie as a role model durint the time of war.

    A major battle in the war the Nazi's fought the Soviet Union for control of Stalingrad in Russia. the battle lost the Nazi's nearly 500,000 of their best troops.

    World War Tow gave jobs to thousands if not millions of people in the U.S. Soldiers were paid and some sent money home, men too old to be in the army replaced the men that were at war, and women worked in factories to help build airplane's ships, tanks etc. WWII created much needed jobs in factories involving the production of war supplies.

    The american economy flourished, while hte scare of communism and muclear war remained. Modern culture ws taking form with television and family oriented suburbs, and the first moves to end discrimination African Americans took place.

    Trying to remain nuetral at first the U.S. had to become involved in ending communism in Vietnam. It was thought to be easy with the country's cutting edge weaponry but 2.6 million American troops served despite the protests of antiwar back home.

    The GI BIll boosted the economy and provided generous loans to veterans. It helped them establish buisnesses , buy homes and attend college, by the end of the bill it was used by 2.2 million veterans.

    The sixties was a time for the country to stand up for what they beleive in wether it was against the Viet Nam war of the rights of African Americans.

    The Civil Rights act was a new law that ended discrimination of African Americans. It ended unequal application of voter registration requirements, school discrimination and facilities that served the general public. This was an extremely progressive moment in history withe exception of those who were pregidous towards African Americans.

    Martin Luther king was a prominent leader in the civil rights movement. He beleived in helping discrimination in a peacful way, He wrote speeches and held protests but never got violent. He was arrested many detimes despite his peacful behavior .

    NASA was a major contribution to the economy . It helped communication satellite that led to telephones, telvision and data service. It helped build a make a wheelchair for disabled people with voice command and a mini computer. NASA spent thirty three million dollars before Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin walked on the moon.

    Ho Chi Minh was a communist leader in Japan. He was one of the most well known leaders in the role of the war between North and South Vietnam. He was a part of the Indochinese Communist party and worked to fight off the French. After the fall of Saigon, it was renamed Hồ Chí Minh City

    Hippies were all about questioning authority, and it's power. It was about peace and not wanting to hurt others, but besides that it was also about rejecting middle-class in favor of a more spiritual , counter-culture. They would practice the rejection of america's money-grubbing ways by not bathing for weeks or using illegal and harmfull drugs such as marijuana.

    Factories that would have been producing consumer goods were being used to make items for the military, causing controversy over the goverment's handling of economics policy. The funds were going overseas, which contributed to an instability of payments since no corresponding funds were returning to the country. Interest rates roas , restricting the amount of capital available for buisnesses and consumers.
