The Tuscarora originally lived in North Carolina and lived in buildings called longhouses. The Tuscarora people hunted, fished, and made arts and crafts. Tuscarora children went to school, helped with chores and would play with each other.

The Tuscarora people did not want anymore settlers on their land. They tried to move to Pennsylvania, but the North Carolina governor would not allow them to go. The Tuscarora people started attacking European settlements. Many of the Tuscarora people were killed or forced to work as slaves.

The European settlers moved to Wake County to build plantations and set up farms. The Tuscarora were often treated badly by the settlers and many were killed in war, died from disease, or enslaved.

At first Wake County was a large, wooded area, thick with wildlife. The land had been abondoned by Indian settlements, making it some of the best farm land the settlers could want.

This gave a reason to move and travel to Wake County. More businesses opened to provide for the needs of the people.

Railroads gave an easier and quicker access to Wake County. Supplies were transported quicker.

The Research Triangle Park was built to help bring in new residents to Raleigh. There were more jobs for people and North Carolina was no longer a poor state.
