  • 1838 - Stereoscope

    1838 - Stereoscope
    Using two mirrors angled at 45 degrees from the eyes of the user and two images on either side of the field of vision, Sir Charles Wheatstone was able to create the first 3-D image.
  • 1956 - Sensorama

    Building on Sir Charles Wheatstone's stereoscope, Morton Heilig created the Sensorama. The booth included vibrating chairs, 3-D images, and other effects to create the first 4-D cinema.
  • 1986 - Super Cockpit

    A pioneer in developing virtual and augmented reality Thomas Furness, PhD, developed the first virtual flight simulator for the Air Force in 1966. A more comprehensive iteration, the Super Cockpit was created and administered by Furness from 1986 - 1989.
  • 2007 - 2010 Google Street View

    Google Street View was introduced in 2007. By 2010 Google Street View had added a 3-D mode.
  • 2014 - Facebook purchases Oculus VR

    Although the Oculus Rift headset was developed in 2010 by 18 year old, Palmer Luckey, it was the sell of the Oculus VR company that pushed virtual reality into the spotlight. Since that time, virtual reality has grown by leaps and bounds and is used by many different industries for a many purposes.
