    Daniel Hess is believed to be the first person to patent a vacuum cleaner. Hess, a resident of West Union, Iowa, called his invention " carpet sweeper", not " vacuum". The machine did, in fact, have a rotating brush like other sweepers. However, it also had an elaborate mechanism of bellows attached to the top of it to generate suction. The amazing thing about his device was that it incorporated two "water containers" to capture dust and loose dirt.
