While the construction of Vilas Hall from 1969 to 1972 marked a new beginning, another star was born during this process: the Department of Communication Arts. Formerly known as the Department of Speech, officials took to renaming it in 1970, and this name has stood the test of time ever since.

As popularity continues to grow, the department continues to provide students access to extracurriculars and new programing. In addition to offering the entire campus course to satisfy general credit requirements, the Department of Mass Communications started a Digital Studies Certificate for students in 2012.
