    In October 1996, Mircosoft lauched Expedia.com giving consumers a new way to book reservations online. Expedia has since grown to be leader in online travel, parenting a dozen brands. Since 1996, they have grown to over 150 travel booking sites in over 70 countries. They employ over 18,000 people. They represent 257,000 bookable properties and over 400 airlines.

    Euro accepted into World Market
    The Euro was introduced in January 1999. The Euro started with the adoption of the Maastricht Treaty named after the Dutch town where the meeting was held. Twelve European states adopted the Euro as their sole currency by the end of 2002. This made travel and business transactions between these countries easier by being able to use the same currency.

    Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama Aug. 29, . The New Orleans levees broke flooding of about 80% of the city of New Orleans and killing 1600 people. Businesses including those related to tourism and travel were affected for months, if not years. Cleanup continues to this day.

    On Oct. 1, 2013, U.S. House Republicans and Senate Democrats failed to agree on a spending bill, causing the U.S. goverment to shut down for 16 days. This disrupted business as usual in the U.S. The U.S. Budget Office concluded that the shutdown cost taxpayers $2 billion.

    The Boeing 777 carrying 239 people disappeared on a flight from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing on March 8, 2014. This flight was missing for over 1 year. Debris was recently found on Reunion Island that may lead to answers about the fate of the plane and its occupants.
