History of The University of South Alabama By AmandaPatton22 May 3, 1963 The University of South Alabama is created by the Alabama Legislature Jun 6, 1964 First classes began; initial enrollment totaled 276 students. Apr 6, 1965 The jaguar is adopted as the mascot. Oct 1, 1965 Ground-breaking for Alpha Dorms, the University's first residence hall complex. Jan 1, 1973 The charter class of 25 students entered the College of Medicine. Oct 6, 1976 The University became a charter member of the Sun Belt Athletic Conference. Aug 1, 1984 The University of South Alabama Baldwin County branch was established. Jul 6, 1998 V. Gordon Moulton named University President. Oct 6, 1999 Dedication of the 208,300-square-foot Mitchell Center. Feb 1, 2005 Implementation of a new $6.2 million campus transportation system, Jag Tran. Aug 1, 2007 Opening of a privately funded student apartment complex, The Grove, which by fall 2008 housed 1,000 students. Dec 1, 2007 USA Trustees approve NCAA-sanctioned football and marching band programs. May 3, 2013 50th Anniversary
