In 1272 the prince of Opole and Racibórz, Wladyslaw, created the town of Żory, which was supposed to guard an important trade route from Silesia to Małopolska.

On February 24, 1272 the prince of Opole-Racibórz Władysław signed an agreement containing the decision to move the village under his authority and the location of the town (under Magdeburg law). It had an oval shape with rectangular market, two gates (Cracow and Cieszyn) and walls.
