History of the telescope

  • The first telescope

    The first telescope
The first telescope was invented by Hans Lippershey in 1608. Hans was a German-born, Dutch lens maker who created the telescope for military purposes. He used two lens to refract the light and magnify his view.

    1608-2016

  • Galileo makes improvments

    Galileo makes improvments
After hearing about this new instrument, Italian physicist Galileo Galilei builds his own. He improved Lippershey’s design and using his new telescope to now observe the sky. This is often regarded as the first astronomical telescope.
  • Sir Issac Newton

    Sir Issac Newton
Sir Issac Newton makes discovery that reflecting light within a telescope gives a clearer view of the universe. This is becasue it reduces the spectrum color that was in the way before.
  • Herschel's discoveries

    Herschel's discoveries
William Herschel makes a new telescope using shiny metal instead of mirrors or lenses. He observed the Milky Way and sees nebuli(not knowing what they were). He also sees Uranus and its moons for the first time.
  • Mt. Wilson

    Mt. Wilson
Mt. Wilson was made by George Hale and was the biggest reflecting telesope in the world. It helped make the discoveries that the universe was expanding and that there were more galaxies than ours.
  • Edwin Hubble discoveries

    Edwin Hubble discoveries
Edwin Hubble observes at Mt. Wilson and discovers the red-shift. This proves the univere is expanding and leads to big bang theory.
  • Penzius and Wilson

    Penzius and Wilson
Astronomers Penzius and Wilson discovered Cosmic Background Radiation, which is also evidence for the Big Bang Theory.
  • Hubble Telescope

    Hubble Telescope
The Hubble space telescope was launched in April 24th, 1990.This is one one of the largest telesopes we use today. This telescope continues to take some of the best telescopes of the universe we have ever seen.
  • WMAP

    WMAP
The Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe, originally known as the Microwave Anisotropy Probe was a spacecraft operating from 2001 to 2010 which measured differences across the sky in the temperature of cosmic microwave background. Headed by Professor Charles Bennett.
  • Kepler Telescope

    Kepler Telescope
The Kepler telescope was launched into space March 7, 2009 and its purpose was to give a larger view of the universe and to find earth like planets. So far no earth like planets have been found.
