Alexander graham bell attempted transmitting speech electronically, and invented the telephone. Bell was competing with another inventor, Elisha Gray, which eventually struck a legal battle, in which Bell ended up winning. The first words ever spoken over the phone, was “Mr. Watson, come here; I want you.” Bell was summoning his assistant. Many people considered Bells invention to be nothing more than a toy, but as we know now it was revolutionary.
