  • TikTok

    TikTok, a new social media app, was launched, later to become one of the biggest social media apps of our time. It now hosts 732 million monthly users globally, and has had a huge impact on marketing as companies have made accounts in order to better market to potential consumers.
  • Death of Vine

    Twitter announces that they are shutting down Vine, which was a widely popular video sharing platform created in 2012. This upset many users and they were forced to migrate to other platforms, such as Musical.ly or TikTok.
  • Death of Musical.ly

    Musical.ly was also a famous social media platform created in 2014 where users could post short videos of lip-syncing or other similar content. When it was officially shut down, there was a huge influx of users who moved to TikTok.
  • Death of Google+

    Google+ was a social network created in 2011 by Google as a platform to compete with other social media platforms. However, it was shut down in 2019, and this goes to show that not even an Internet giant such as Google is safe from the competition of other messaging or social platforms.
  • Article 13

    In order to protect intellectual property and honor copyright rules, the EU created Article 13 to protect copyright holds of content creators. However, this sparked major controversy and some say it threatens online democracy.
  • Zoom (and other video calling platforms)

    During the COVID19 pandemic, the whole world was forced to quarantine, making it difficult to attend meetings, school, or other social gatherings. Video calling platforms, such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams, gained major traction and has become a basic staple in professional and personal communication.
