Horror films tend to include conventional elements of which the audience is scared of. Such as demon exorcism and monsters like Frankenstein and what not. There tends to be a protagonist who has to fight off an underdog situation of demonic figures.

During the 1930's the Gothic convention really hit off by Universal studios. Such greats as Frankenstein was released(1931). Adding further to the evolution of horror films.

The transition from Gothic to Contemporary concerns meant the addition of subgenres such as; Demonic and Doomsday films aswell as the supernatural convention beginning to form.

Horror films have gone for a less iconic view and more of a dark genre of horror. Meaning that horror has evolved from monsters to demonic to supernatural to now which is more of a religious aspect such as the "Exorcist".
