The first Local jail was created and built-in York, in 1720. The name of it was Walnut Street jail. This is the first jail that will, later on, expand to a state prison. -
The first official United States prison
The first official U.S. prison was Leavenworth in Kansas. It was created around 1891. It started getting inmates around 1906. -

The number of inmates is higher and higher every day. Half of those inmates are in for drug charges and drug-related crimes. But overall, the problem is not the number of inmates, but the price. "From 2000 to 2012, the federal prison system's budget grew 79 percent, to more than $6.5 billion." -
the first decrease in inmates
As I said in the previous event, the number of inmates has not stopped growing. But for the first time in 3 decades, it has dropped. "The decrease in the incarcerated population was not related to releases, but rather the 40% drop in prison admissions and 16% drop in jail admissions."
