    the school was funded by donations from Catholic families that settled in Brisbane. the school. the school was not far from St Stephens Cathedral is today.

    St Stephens chapel starts construction in Brisbane for the 60 Catholic families there at the time.
  • St Stephens Chapel First Mass

    St Stephens Chapel First Mass
    The first mass was in St Stephens as done by Father James Hanley. with only 60 catholic familys living in brisbane.
  • St Stephens Chapel Finishes construction

    St Stephens chapel was open to the public for Masses and more. it was the first Catholic Church in Queensland. At the time it was the grandest building in Brisbane which was only a small time.
  • Bishop James Quinn Arrives in Australia

    Bishop James Quinn arrives in Australia with 5 priests and 6 Irish sisters of mercy. he is surprised about the poverty of the mostly Irish settlers
  • Brisbane becomes Diocese.

    Brisbane becomes Diocese.
    Because Brisbane becoming Diocese St Stephens chapel became a cathedral for the first Catholic Bishop of Brisbane James Quin.
  • Religious schools loose government funding.

    Religious schools are forced by law to not have government funding so Religious schools now need funding from students parents paying school fees.
  • The great depression

    during the great depression, there were fewer jobs so people could not earn money. due to this schools got more students and fewer
    teachers. Catholic schools still made it through the great depression and opened 19 new schools during that time
  • Religous Schools Gain Government Funding

    after years of catholic schools no getting funds from the government parents protested wanting there to be government funds for catholic schools.
  • Macaulay college allows lay teachers

    Macaulay college in Brisbane allows lay teachers to learn how to teach at catholic schools before this lay teachers only learnt for two years before teaching
