The first Catholic school funded entirely by local money
Lay couple Mary and Michelle Burke started the first catholic church funded entirely by the local community's money. This school had two teachers, and 56 students. 5 years later the school would get its first permanent church St Stevens. -
Bishop Quinn
Bishop Quinn arrived upon the Yarra yarra. -
The First Catholic Secondary School was established
Mother Vincent Witty, and the Sisters of Mercy established the first catholic secondary school All Hallows. -
St Stephens became a Catherdral

The first school staffed entirly by Lay teachers
All Hallows and James School for Boys became the first schools to be completely staffed by lay teachers. The student teachers taking there training before and after school. -
New Laws
New laws were passed to provide: Free, Compulsory, and Secular, schooling. These new laws also removed state funding for all religious schools. -
New Catholic Schools
35 New Catholic Schools were started -
Archdiocese of Brisbane was formed
Arch Bishop Robert Dun was appointed. -
Robert Dun sadly passes away
Arc Bishop Robert Dun passed away and the new Arch Bishop James Chui took over. -

Incease in Lay staffing and schools
There is an increase in Lay staffing and 26 new schools are opened. -
Funding
After the Golburn school strike in 1962 catholic schools received funding. -
End of the Decade
By the end of the decade there were 43 000 students enrolled and 113 schools across the whole of the Archdiocese. -
Francis Rush
Francis Rush was appointed as the new Arch Bishop. Francis was the fist Arch Bishop that was actually born in Queensland. He was a priest for 62 years and an Arch Bishop for 40.
