History of the Atom

  • Democritus

    Democritus

He was one of the first people to discover something about the atom. He stated that all matter is made up of atoms. He also stated that atoms are eternal and invisible and so small that they can't be divided, and they entirely fill up the space they're in.
  • Isaac Newton

    Isaac Newton

He proposed that we live in a mechanical universe with small solid masses in motion.
  • John Dalton

    John Dalton

He formed the atomic theory, which states that all matter is compossed of tiny, indestructible particles called atoms that are all alike and have the same atomic weight. He improved on Newton's theory by saying that the particles are indestructible.
  • James Clerk Maxwell

    James Clerk Maxwell

He propsed electric and magnetic fields filled the void in the universe.
  • E. Goldstein

    E. Goldstein

He used a CRT to study "canal rays" which had electrical and magnetic properties opposite of an electron. He also found out the mass of a proton.
  • J.J. Thomson

    J.J. Thomson

He was an English physicist who discovered the electron. He also developed the plum-pudding model of the atom. HIs gold-foil experiment fired alpha particles at gold foil.
  • R.A. Millikan

    R.A. Millikan

He was a physicist from the US and he used Thomson's data and his own experiemtns to calculate the charge and mass of an electron.
  • Ernest Rutherford

    Ernest Rutherford

He used the results of his gold-foil experiment to state that all the mass of an atom was in a small positively-charged ball at the center of the atom.
  • Schrodinger

    Schrodinger

He laid the foundation of the wave-mechanics approach to the quantum theory. His theory was based off of energy levels in the atom
  • James Chadwick

    James Chadwick

He was an English physicist that discovered the neutron
