    American School for the Deaf

    The American School for the Deaf (ASD)is the oldest school for the deaf in the United States. It was the first school for children with disabilities anywhere in the western hemisphere. It is known for providing comprehensive educational programs and services for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.   • Council for Exceptional Children

    Council for Exceptional Children

    The Council for Exceptional Children is the first advocacy group for children with disabilities. The CEC is one of the largest special education advocacy groups. The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) is dedicated to improving the success of children and youth with disabilities and/or gifts and talents. CEC also offers resources and professional development for special education teachers.
  • Classification of Autism

    Classification of Autism

    The first-ever clinical account of the disorder was published by Dr. Leo Kanner in 1943. Dr. Kanner developed the first child psychiatric service at a U.S. hospital. Dr. Kanner studied a group of 11 children by observation of their "autistic disturbances of affective contact." In 2013, it became known as Autism spectrum disorder.Autism spectrum disorder is a developmental disorder consisting of problems in social-communication, restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior,activities.

    The Arc was founded in 1952 by a group of parents of children with developmental disabilities who wanted their children's abilities to be respected and their independence encouraged. The Arc promotes and protects the human rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.   • PARC v Commonwealth

    PARC v Commonwealth

    In the PARC versus Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the judge ruled it was unconstitutional to deny services to special needs children. PARC was the first significant lawsuit challenging the denial of FAPE to children with disabilities in the least restrictive environment (LRE). It was concluded that students with mental retardation are to receive free public education. Also that students with disabilities should be included in a regular classroom rather than an isolated special class.

    Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    This act outlined that public schools should provide all students with an education appropriate for their unique needs at public expense(FAPE). A free appropriate public education (FAPE) to all qualified students with disabilities. An appropriate education must be designed to meet the individual educational needs of the student. To be educated with students without disabilities. This includes appropriate evaluation and placement procedures.

    Americans with Disabilities Act

    The Americans with Disabilities Act is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities. These areas include employment, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public. The purpose of the law is to make sure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. This includes making public areas inclusive for customers with vision, hearing, physical & speech impaired.
  • No Child Left Behind

    No Child Left Behind

    The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) is a federal law that provides money for extra educational assistance for poor children based on their academic improvements. It also included Title I provisions applying to disadvantaged students. This law was put into place to hold schools accountable for student outcomes. The NCLB law focused on boosting the performance of certain groups of students, such as ELLs, students in special education, poor/minority children.
  • Assistive Technology Act

    Assistive Technology Act

    The Assistive Technology Act is to promote awareness of, and access to, assistive technology devices and services. The Act seeks to provide AT to persons with disabilities, so they can more fully participate in education, employment, and daily activities on a level playing field with other members of their communities. The Act covers people with disabilities of all ages, in all environments (early intervention, K-12, post-secondary, vocational rehab., community living, etc.)

    IDEA

    The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 is a law that enforces equity, accountability, and excellence in education for children with disabilities. The IDEA 2004 provides federal financial assistance to State and Local Education Agencies to guarantee special education and related services to eligible children with disabilities.
