    BBS (Bulletin Board Systems) were the first online chat meetings that allowed people to download and post messages to one another.These chat rooms started locally but Tom Jennings' and FidoNet linked numerous BBS groups together to create a worldwide computer network.

    United States government set up the Advanced Research Projects Agency (arpa) to help jump start new efforts in science and technology research. This agency would nurture the Internet.

    1970's Take Over

    CompuServe became a business-oriented mainframe computer communication solution originating from BBS networks. This network allowed its users to "email" one another.

    1990's highlight

    AOL (America Online) was the rough draft of social networking sites today. This network users were able to create communities, member profiles, and search engine to expand networking with other people.

    Yahoo became a search engine, Amazon began selling books online, and everyone wanted a PC computer at their home.

    Social networks explode

    During the late 1990's sites like Classmates.com allowed users to find old classmates from their schools. Also sites like AsianAvenue.com and Blackplant.com were created. All of these are still operational and have millions of users everyday.

    LinkedIn was created in 2003 to help businesses and employers find job seeking users. Still used today with more that 297 million users.

    Myspace hot or not?

    Started as one of the most used social media networking sites during the early 2000's. With tons of music to listen to, music videos to watch, and a creative outline for a profile gave the user the ultimate experience. The number of users has declined eventually changing the site towards more about bands and music networking.

    Facebook Take Over

    Began as a Havard student chat-room became a major social media with 1.3 billion users. Facebook allows members to post interests, share information, create groups, post pictures or videos, and allow users to express themselves. Facebook has adapted to smart phones by allowing users to "like" posts of other users. During 2007 they launched a platform that allowed third-party developers to create applications eventually launching app store. Now users can live stream with their cameras. What next?
