    AOL was founded in 1985 as an internet provider site, and in 1995 had instant messenger (AIM) where people could communicate through quick instant messages.

    It is said to be the first social media network as it would allow you to create a profile and befriend others, including those who did not have a profile. The name Six Degrees was in reference to degrees of separation’ theory which lasted for about 6 years.
  • Napster

    Napster was created in 1999 by Shawn Fanning. It started as a file-sharing site that could share files throug MP3 with others.
  • Friendster

    Friendster
    Frienster launches in 2002, but is soon over shoadow by Facebook although inicially had 55 million users and many people at work.

    MySpace begins in the early 2000s as a social media site where people could connect and make friends. Although MySpace is not as big as FB, today, many musicians use this site to promote their music.

    Alex Welch and Darren Crystal created Photobucket in 2003 with funding from Trinity Ventures. Photobucket is a site that is used for uploading, downloading, sharing, linking and finding photos. These can be shared with other social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace. This site has over 23 million montly users.

    The Facebook was started in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, a Harvard college student with the purpose of sharing information about one another through a social network. 1200 students signed up within the first 24 hours. Today it is one of the largest social media networks with over 1 billion users and worth $56 billion dollars as of January 20, 2019.

    In 2006 as mesasging through SMS became popular, Twitter was born allowing used to send twitts of 140 characters. Today Twitter has over 500 million users.

    Originated in 2004 by Ludicorp, but now owned by Smug mug with about 87 million members. It is a site designated to share and store photos and videos.
  • Pinterest

    Pinterest
    Pinterest was launch in December of 2010 where access was only gained by invitation. Around 10000 people had an account after 9 months. This was while the site was being operated out of a small apartment. By 2013, they won $225, which made the company worth $3.8 billion.
  • Instagram

    Founded in 2010 for people who share information better by sharing photos. in only two months there were 1,000,000 users. Facebook bought in 2012.
  • Snapchat

    Snapchat
    As a sharing app with individuals or groups where photos and videos can be sent and will disappear after a period of time. Snapchat is used by an average of 150,000 thousand people a day.
