  • Community College Act was passed by the North Carolina General Assembly on July 1, 1963

    The 1963 legislation settled several defining outlooks of the community college system. One critical debate between academic and vocational or trade education was defined as the institutions offering college level courses, but operating primarily as a work force development system.

    Charlotte's predominately African American two-year college, Mecklenburg College had joined with Charlotte's predominately White Industrial Educational Center to become Charlotte Community College System. Eventually becoming known as Central Piedmont Community College.

    Harvey Gantt Becomes Charlotte's First Black Mayor

    Harvey Bernard Gantt was born January 14, 1943. He was the first African-American to be admitted to Clemson, and earned a a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture. Gantt went on to attend MIT and earned a Masters Degree of City Planning. In 1983 Gantt became Charlotte's first Black Mayor, and served terms (4 years).
