  • Morrill Act

    Morrill Act
    United States Senator Justin Morrill of Vermont proposes federal funding for new state universities. It wasn't until February 6, 1984, that the Ohio legislature finally accepted the proposal.
  • The Ohio State University Founded

    The Ohio State University Founded
    OSU was founded as a land grant university due to the Morrill Act of 1862. Its original name was therefore "Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College" sine the school was intended to help educate those in the farming community.
  • University Opens

    University Opens
    The University finally opened its doors and took in its first class which consisted of 25 students.
  • The First Class of the University Graduate

    The First Class of the University Graduate
    The first class to graduate the university consisted of six men. It was not until the following year that the first woman graduated from the university
  • Name Changed to "The Ohio State University"

    Name Changed to "The Ohio State University"
    The university decided to expands its focus towards more majors than just solely agriculture. In light of this event, they decided to change the name of the University to "The Ohio State University"
  • Ohio State Becomes a Public Ivy

    Ohio State Becomes a Public Ivy
    The University founded its Law school. This event led to the university receiving high ranks and awards from other institutions as well as becoming known as an Ivy.
  • Ohio State's Graduate

    Ohio State's Graduate
    In order to create more opportunities for students to receive their master and doctoral degrees, the University formed a graduate school.
  • Ohio States College of Medicine/Dentistry Founded

    Ohio States College of Medicine/Dentistry Founded
    The College of Medicine is formed through a merger with Starling Medical College. Not long after, in the same year, the University also formed the School of Dentistry.
  • Ohio State University Becomes Prestigious

    Ohio State University Becomes Prestigious
    Through the formation of more colleges within the university, they became inducted into the Association of American Universities. To this day, they are the only public university in Ohio with this title.

    Ohio State University Gets Names Best State Institution
    In Governor Harry L. Davis' inaugural address, he states that Ohio State University contains the educational system in which it will soon become the largest and best state institution in the US.
  • University Research Founded

    University Research Founded
    The Ohio State Research Foundation started to begin funding their faculty to participate in research projects.
  • Mershon Center for International Securiet

    Mershon Center for International Securiet
    This institution was founded by Colonel Ralph D. Mershon who gave funds to the university so that it can become more established as a research institution in international relations and security. The university still has these funds to this day.

    United States Department of Homeland Security
    The US Department of Homeland Security opened its main base for the National Academic Consortium for Homeland Security at Ohio State.
  • Terrorist Attack

    Terrorist Attack
    During a fire drill due to fluorine leak in a laboratory building, a male student drove into the crowd of students outside and began to stab students nearby him. The attack lasted two minutes before the OSU Police responded and ended the incident.
